This is an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency actions to prepare, repair and recover the City before, during and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, ice storm, tropical storm, winter storm, flooding, etc.
) or other conditions (natural or manmade).
Under the leadership of the Director of Public Works, the Wastewater Plant Operator performs a full range of monitoring, maintenance, operations, and repair work on the City's wastewater treatment system and facilities; performs routine operational, maintenance, and cleaning tasks; maintains a variety of records and reports related to wastewater system operations; may operate computers for process control and monitor the SCADA system.
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Public Works and Plant Administrator, this technical positions are involved in all aspects of the operations and maintenance of the City's wastewater treatment facility, work includes but is not limited to sampling and testing wastewater, responding to emergencies after hours, and operating light to heavy equipment.
MAJOR DUTIES Operate, monitor, and maintain the City's wastewater treatment plant.
Maintain a variety of records and reports related to wastewater system operations and prepare monthly and quarterly reports as required.
Daily Operational Logbooks and monitoring reports of the SCADA System.
Following proper procedures, gathers samples at appropriate sampling points and records information; and performs basic laboratory tests, as needed.
Enter manholes and other confined spaces involving potential biological, chemical, electrical, and/or physical hazards.
Performs a variety of preventive maintenance tasks; cleans and monitors the operations of automatic samplers; checks and maintains proper oil levels in equipment; reads and adjusts pressures and flows for seal water; changes charts; and bleeds off compressed air reservoirs.
Perform all aspects of sampling, monitoring, and testing required to maintain compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations governing the wastewater treatment process, stormwater, and sludge management by using a variety of testing equipment following related procedures.
Checks flow patterns of water and sludge; ensures proper operation of stand-by-generators; measures sludge depths and troubleshoots the sludge pumping system; and checks sludge temperature.
Maintains the facility in a clean, orderly, and safe condition; performs routine grounds maintenance work as needed, including painting and landscaping work; and performs preventive maintenance as assigned.
Inspects and cleans facilities and grounds.
Safely operates a variety of hand power tools.
Follow all safety procedures and PPE policies.
Must work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks.
Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with subordinates, supervisors, customers, vendors, and any other persons or organization with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and employer goals.
Consult with and advises superiors on needs of the plant.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Ability to tend to pumps, conveyors, blowers, chlorinators, UV Systems, and other equipment used to treat wastewater.
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant and auxiliary equipment.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment and its functions.
Knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in testing sludge and effluent.
Knowledge of computer software.
Knowledge of current literature and modern techniques in the field of wastewater treatment.
Ability to work weekends and holidays, to be on call and respond to calls during non-scheduled work hours as required.
Must be able to keep confidentiality.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators Licensed C, B, or A Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with a record acceptable to the City's driving policy and insurance program.
Experience in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant preferred Ability to perform essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
